Hikes and trails

The Berti refuge is the ideal pied-à-terre for all the hikes in the mountains of the Popera group and in the westernmost area of Comelico. Here, you will find everything you need for a refreshment break at the end of a daily hike or to recover strength and a few hours of sleep before getting back on the road.

In addition to offering you all the comfort of the rooms and the authenticity of the cuisine, we are always available to help you plan days of hikes suitable for you and your needs and to support you in case you encounter any problems with mountain equipment. We want you to be able to tackle the journey in total confidence and safety.

Vallon Popera ring

Ss: path 122 – signpost  – path 101

Departure: Berti Hut

Arrival: Berti Hut

Duration: 3.00 hours

Difficulty: Easy

Theme: Visit to the places of the First World War during a naturalistic excursion in the beauty and variety of alpine flowering

The Vallon Popera ring itinerary is a talking thematic path, a project of the CAI Veneto.

Start from the Berti Hut(1950m) following path 122 to the former Olivo Sala Hut (2094m), command of the troops of Vallon Popera during the First World War (30 minutes).
Here continue left along the path adapted by GSA Alpini del Montello (trail sign 122 e  ) to the Belvedere, a panoramic point of the valley, where you can admire the Campanili di Popera, Monte Popera, Passo della Sentinella, the Croda Rossa, the Pala and the Triangolo di Popera (5 minutes).
From here continue on the Creston Popera through paths and trenches of the First World War and reach Croda Sora i Colesei – wooden cross (2303 m), panoramic point on the Val Comelico, Val Pusteria and the Austrian Alps (60 minutes). 
Returning to the same path for 5 minutes, turning right at the crossroads, you can reach the Popera fork (2298 m) (table – trail sign 122 and – 20 minutes). The visit to the war tunnels with an observatory on the Val Pusteria is suggestive.
Going downhill along the path that passes under the Triangolo di Popera, you will reach the junction at an altitude of 2105 where, on the right for path 124, you will reach the small but fascinating Popera lake (2142 m) (35 minutes).
From here you can return to the Berti Hut, thanks to the path 101 (30 minutes).

Berti Hut – Popera lake and return at 1.00 am – path 101
Berti Hut – Sala Hut – Belvedere and return at 1.00 am – path 122
Berti Hut – Popera fork and return at 2.00 am – path 122, at the end of the hairpin bends, table, signpost on the left .

Connection of the Lunelli - Berti huts

Ss: path 101

Departure: Lunelli Hut (parking)

Arrival: Berti Hut

Duration: 1.00 h 

Difficulty: Easy

Theme: Beautiful natural landscape with splendid flowers and the wonderful waterfall of the Risena stream.

It is the simplest and quickest excursion to reach the Berti Hut.
Start from the Lunelli Hut parking (1568m) and follow path 101 which, with wide bends, will take you to the Berti Hut (1950m).

Connection back to Padola and bus stop on the S. Stefano di Cadore-San Candido Pusteria

Ss: trails 101-171 – paved road

Departure: Berti Hut

Arrival: loc.Moiè Padola di Comelico bus stop

Duration: 2.00 / 2.30 h 

Difficulty: Easy

Theme: Alternative path for the return to Padola and bus stop
connecting S. Stefano di Cadore and Val Pusteria-San Candido.
Path of naturalistic beauty through green coniferous and beech woods, streams and waterfalls, without particular difficulties and without uphill gradients. 

Start from the Berti Hut (1950m) downhill along path 101 to the Lunelli Hut (1568m). From here, heading south (see table), take path 171 which enters the wood and, after crossing two streams on bridges, you reach the junction with path 126. Then go left downhill to the Valgrande thermal baths.
From here, via an asphalted road, you reach the locality of Moiè (1230 m) where there is the bus stop that leads to Passo Monte Croce Comelico-Sesto Pusteria-San Candido and Santo Stefano di Cadore.

Alternatively : from the Lunelli Hut you can directly reach the bus stop in Moié (1230 m) via an asphalted road. 

Lunelli Hut - Colesei connection to the former Sala Hut - Berti Hut

Ss: path 171 (alternative), path 124 to the former Olivo Sala Hut, path 122 to the Berti Hut

Departure: Lunelli Refuge (parking) on ​​a former military road

Arrival: Berti Refuge (Passing through the Pian della Biscia Colesei fork)

Duration: 2.30 h 

Difficulty: Medium

Theme: Hike recommended for all those who love silence and want to spend a few hours immersed in nature, between greenery and sky, inebriated by the scent of the forest, surrounded by a wonderful panorama and an unusual view of the fortifications of the Vallo Littorio.

Park at the Lunelli Hut (1568 m) and along the former military road through the green pastures of Monte Colesei, or alternatively, along the direct path 171, reach the Pian della Biscia saddle (1942 m) in about an hour.
From the saddle in a short time you can reach the top of Monte Colesei (1972 m), a panoramic point on the Popera Group, Val Comelico, the Carnic Alps and the Italian-Austrian border ridges. From the saddle, in about half an hour following path 15A, you can visit externally, at the base of the north-east wall of the Croda Sora i Colesei, the imposing fortifications of the Vallo Littorio, better known as “Linea non mi fido”, built during the fascist period to counter a possible German advance, but never used in the war. 

For expert hikers:
Reached the end of the fortifications, climb in a short time (30 minutes) to the overhanging Popera saddle with direct descent for Vallon Popera to the Berti Hut (40 minutes).

For medium hikers :
Re-enter path 15A at the Pian della Biscia fork and, at the table, continue on path 124, passing the base of the east face of Creston Popera on a beautiful ledge through a patch of mountain pine and reach the steep channel that , with rapid serpentines, leads to the former Olivo Sala Hut (2094 m). From here with a short descent to the left, path 122, you will reach the Berti Hut. 

Connection to Monte Croce Comelico pass - Colesei - former Sala Hut - Berti Hut

Ss: paths 15A – 124 – 122 

Departure: Passo Monte Croce Comelico (parking)

Arrival: Berti Hut (Passing through lake dell’Orso-fork Pian della Biscia Colesei-former Sala refuge)

Duration: 2.30 h 

Difficulty: Medium

Theme: Excursion immersed in all shades of green, relaxing the basin of Lake Bear, breathtaking views of the magnificent amphitheater of the Comelico Dolomites, unusual views of the fortifications of Vallo Littorio. 

Park at the Monte Croce Comelico Pass (1636m) and follow paths 15A and 124, crossing the beautiful basin of the Bear Lake and reach the Pian della Biscia saddle (1942m) in about an hour.
From the saddle in a short time you can reach the top of Monte Colesei (1972 m), a panoramic point on the Popera Group, on the Val Comelico, on the Carnic Alps and on the Italian-Austrian border ridges. From the saddle, in about half an hour following path 15A, you can visit externally, at the base of the north-east wall of the Croda Sora i Colesei, the imposing fortifications of the Vallo Littorio, better known as “Linea non mi fido”, built during the fascist period to counter a possible German advance, but never used in the war.

Return connection to the Monte Croce Comelico Pass

Arrival: Passo Monte Croce Comelico

Duration: 2.00 / 2.30 h 

Difficulty: Medium

Theme: Alternative path for the return to the Monte Croce Comelico Pass which, together with the ascent excursion through Monte Colesei, allows you to make a loop circuit with departure and arrival at the Monte Croce Pass with an intermediate stop at the Berti Hut.

Start from the Berti Hut (1950m) downhill along path 101 to the Lunelli Hut (1568m). From here, heading east (see table) along path 155, take the former military road of Monte Colesei. At the third bend on the right (see table) it enters the wood up to the intersection of the Zancurto wooded road. On the left, uphill, you reach Passo Monte Croce Comelico (1636 m).

Pass of the Sentinel

Ss path 101

Departure: Berti Hut

Arrival: Berti Hut

Duration: 4.00 am 

Difficulty: Difficult

Theme: Visit to an important and strategic historical site of the First World War and passage under the majestic walls of the Popera group 

Start from the Berti Hut (1950 m) (path 101) slightly uphill and reach the small lake of Vallon Popera (2142 m). Continuing to the left along gravels you will then reach the lower part of the former glacier where, during the flowering, you will be able to observe magnificent mountain poppies in yellow and red colors. Precisely in this glacier in 1983 the remains of the so-called Unknown Soldier were found , who died while defending his homeland during the Great War. Continuing on the ridge you can admire the majestic walls of Monte Popera and Cima Undici. Continuing along the gravels, you will reach Passo della Sentinella (2717 m).
To return to the Hut, downhill before the crest of the moraine, take the path marked with red marks on the left which rejoins the path 101 near the Vallon Popera lake (shorter and less demanding route than that of the climb).

Camosci saddle

Ss: trails 164 – 123 – 153

Departure: Lunelli Hut (parking)

Arrival: Berti Hut

Duration: h 3.00 / 3.30 

Difficulty: Difficult

Theme: Multiple landscapes visited in this itinerary: from green fir woods, to the small Cadin lake, from a wild mountain to a splendid flowery meadow 

Start from the Lunelli Hut (1568 m), where you can park your car, and follow path 164, slightly downhill towards the south, until you cross the Risena stream and go up the opposite side of the valley reaching Lake Cadin (1640 m ).
Then continue to the right, along path 123 (table) for wide hairpin bends up to Cadin dei Bagni where you will cross path 153 coming from Passo S.Antonio – Col d’la Tenda – Piovan bivouac.
From here, through the Forcella dei Camosci, you will enter the Vallon Popera (the most challenging part of the route) and you will reach the Berti Hut (1950m). 

Connection of the Prati di Croda Rossa Huts - Berti Hut

Ss: paths 15A – 124 – 122

Departure: Prati di Croda Rossa Huts

Arrival: Berti Refuge (Passing through Pian della Biscia Colesei and former Olivo Sala Hut)

Duration: 3.30 h 

Difficulty: Medium/Difficult

Theme: Excursion that allows the connection of the Sesto Pusteria Valley with the Popera Valley without passing on equipped paths 

Start from the Prati di Croda Rossa Huts (1900m) following path 15A which runs along the north-east walls of the imposing Croda Rossa and the Pala di Popera.

For expert hikers:
Go up in a short time (30 minutes) to the Popera saddle above with a direct descent for Vallon Popera to the Berti Hut (40 minutes).

For medium hikers :
Continue along path 15A along the north-east walls of Croda Sora i Colesei where the fortifications of the Vallo Littorio are located, up to the Pian della Biscia fork. Here, at the table, continue on path 124, passing the base of the east wall of Creston Popera on a beautiful ledge through a patch of mountain pine and reach the steep channel which, with rapid serpentines, leads to the former Olivo Sala Hut (mt. 2094). From here with a short descent to the left, path 122, you will reach the Berti Hut.

Connection S.Antonio Pass-Zovo -Sant'Anna - Padola to Casera Aiarnola Rocca di Campo (Tre Picchi) Berti

Ss: path 164 – path 152 (alternative starting from Padola) – path 152 – 153

Arrival: Berti Hut (Passing through Casera Aiarnola)

Duration: 5.00 / 5.30 h 

Difficulty: difficult

(Alternative: from the mountain station of the Col d’la Tenda 
Ss chairlift: 126- 153
Duration: 3.30 / 4.00 h)

Theme: Long hike in a wild environment visiting the less known and less popular south-eastern area of ​​the Popera group, passing at the foot of Mount Aiarnola, Croda da Campo, Cima d’Ambata and the grandiose east face of Cima Bagni 

Start from Passo S.Antonio-Zovo (1476m) and follow path 164, or from the wooded road of Lake S.Anna (1379m) passing through Lake Aiarnola, and reach Casera Aiarnola (1602m). Alternative: start from Padola (1250 m) following path 152.
From Casera Aiarnola go left on path 152, uphill, until you cross path 153 at an altitude of around 190 m. Following path 153 to the right you will reach the fork of the Rocca di Campo (Tre Picchi) (2208 m).
On a slight descent to Valon de la Sapada, pass the fork of the Rocca dei Bagni, continuing to the Piovan bivouac, Cadin dei Bagni, through the Camosci fork, from which you will enter the Vallon Popera (the most challenging part of the route) and you will reach the Berti Hut.

Alternatively : departing from the mountain station of the Col d’la Tenda chairlift, passing through the junction on the right with path 126 in the Vallon de la Sapada, it reaches rai path 153 which continues to fork della Rocca dei Bagni, Piovan bivouac, Cadin dei Bagni, Forcella Camosci, from which you will enter the Vallon Popera (the most challenging part of the route) and you will reach the Berti Hut.
